Department of Orthodontics of Mashhad Dental School offers a full time 18 months short course in “Application of Temporary Anchorage Devices in Clinical Orthodontics”.

The short course is geared towards broadening and enhancing an applicant’s knowledge and practice in this field of clinical orthodontics thus helping to prepare them for accurate and scientific application of temporary anchorage devices in selected orthodontic patients upon successful completion of the program.

The applicant participates include orthodontic specialists who are interested in the field of temporary anchorage devices (TADs).

Applicants participate in a diverse didactic and clinical orthodontic experience and research in the field of TADs. Course work includes but is not limited to:

  1. Learn the biomechanics of temporary anchorage devices.
  2. Learn the appropriate patient selection for these devices insertion.
  3. Learn the insertion methods of temporary anchorage devices includes miniscrews in various sites of the jaws and miniplates.

 

Interdisciplinary procedures between the departments of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery. Primary activities include followings: using temporary anchorage devices for special tooth movements, follow-up of orthognathic surgery cases, surgery-like orthodontics by application of mini-plates, and observation of orthognathic surgeries.

Applicants will be expected to treat approximately 10-15 of their own patients. The course component requires the Applicants to orthodontic record-taking, orthodontic diagnosis, treatment planning and treat in following cases:

  1. Molar intrusion
  2. Molar distalization
  3. Molar protraction
  4. Molar uprighting
  5. Maxillary expansion
  6. Incisors intrusion
  7. Anterior segment retraction
  8. Posterior segment intrusion
  9. bone-anchored maxillary protraction (BAMP)

Throughout the short course, participants will gain experience with orthodontic practice management software, orthodontic diagnostic and case presentation software and cone-beam computed tomography, as well as exposure to a variety of surgical appliances and techniques including insertion of miniplates.

Academic requirements for the 18 months short course in “Application of Temporary Anchorage Devices in Clinical Orthodontics “are as follows:

  • Compliance with the program's policies and protocols as described in the Student's Handbook.
  • Successful completion of the mandatory coursework, designated assignments and final examinations.
  • Validation of clinical competencies through delivering evidence-based patient care for assigned patients under master supervision.
  • Completion of the research component of the program with successful submission of a research project.

The Core Curriculum of this short course is divided into three broad sections. The first covers the basics of biomechanical aspect of temporary anchorage devices, includes the following part (theory 120 hours):

  1. Biological perspective
  2. Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
  3. Biomechanical Considerations
  4. Anchorage devices systems and clinical Application
  5. Skeletal Anchorage

 

The second covers the pre-clinical aspects; includes             Insertion of the miniscrews and miniplates under orthodontic master supervision on the jaw models  (40 hours)

 

The third part covers the clinical aspects; includes:

 

  1. Patient selection
  2. Diagnosis and treatment planning
  3. Insertion of miniscrews under orthodontic master supervision and miniplates under dentofacial surgeon supervision base on treatment plan
  4. Apply the appropriate force system
  5. Follow up the patients

Applicants will be expected to treat approximately 10-15 of their own patients.

Successful completion of the mandatory coursework, designated assignments and final examinations.
