Iran embarks on internationalization
Three ministries and two top universities establish what is expected to be a groundbreaking development in the Iranian higher education—EducationIRAN. Initially proposed by the Office of Vice-Chancellor for Global Strategies and International Affairs of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), EducationIRAN has now evolved into a joint project among the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Ministry of Health and Medical Education; the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology; Tehran University of Medical Sciences; and the University of Tehran.
The center is expected to facilitate Iran’s effective entrance into the global higher education and help the country adopt a significant role in the global setting of higher education, as has been stressed by the representatives of the five founding organizations. The committee believes that EducationIRAN will not only put Iran on the map, but will also improve the status of domestic higher education and raise all standards. Conceived with the main purpose of managing and monitoring the international aspects of Iran’s higher education, EducationIRAN will act as a platform that contributes to the internationalization of Iranian higher education through student and faculty mobility, joint academic research ventures and international projects, to name a few.
In addition, EducationIRAN is to serve as a conduit for transferring Iran’s rich culture and heritage to communities and societies around the world. EducationIRAN, despite being in the initial stages, is being rapidly developed by utilizing all necessary and available resources to become the central framework through which the international aspects of Iran’s system of higher education will be greatly improved.

Iran to Establish Center of International Higher Education
As a groundbreaking development in the higher education landscape of Iran and a gateway through which the country can effectively enter the global international field of higher education, EducationIRAN is to be established to mark a major milestone in Iran’s path to adopt a significant role in the global setting of higher education. Originally the proposal of the Office of Vice-Chancellor for Global Strategies and International Affairs of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), EducationIRAN has now evolved into a joint project among the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, and the two top universities of the country, namely Tehran University of Medical Sciences and University of Tehran.
EducationIRAN as an Obligation
Hailed as one of the most crucial necessities in Iran’s current higher education landscape, presence in various international educational arenas was emphasized numerously by representatives of each of the five key organizations.
As a program designed to manage and monitor the international aspects of Iran’s higher education, EducationIRAN has been developed to act as a platform, facilitating global higher education interactions including, though not limited to, student and faculty mobility, joint academic/research ventures, international projects.
Also, EducationIRAN was envisioned as the route through which Iran’s culture and heritage can be transferred to individuals, communities and societies around the world.
It has been emphasized that the practices revolving around the establishment, development and operation of EducationIRAN will not only put Iran on the map globally, but will also improve the status of domestic higher education and raise all standards.
A National Framework
One of the most central themes in the meetings held by the above-mentioned ministries and universities has been a constant emphasis on the fact that EducationIRAN has been created as, and is to remain, a national entity which will benefit universities and institutes of higher education in the near future. In effect, EducationIRAN is aimed to bring the international interactions of domestic universities together in an effort to present a unified image to the world.
In accordance with this spirit, the contributions of these five organizations, most importantly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been requested.
Though still in its initial stages, EducationIRAN is being rapidly developed by utilizing all necessary and available resources, and, in the near future, it is to become the central framework through which the international aspects of Iran’s system of higher education will be mediated.
