Faculty of Medicine

In 1992, Faculty of medicine, with the approval of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, started its activity. Now, it has 16 departments (covering basic and clinical sciences). It has an unrivaled number of 80 faculty members, and one hospital named Shahid Mostafa Khomeini is affiliated to the Faculty.

The Faculty trains around 400 students in over 5 postgraduate and medical programs. Currently, the Faculty has international students.

The Faculty has comprehensive programs on clinical sciences covering M.D. The Faculty is committed to innovation in education, research excellence, ethics and integrity, and comprehensive clinical services. The Faculty has comprehensive programs on clinical sciences covering M.D. It offers graduate degrees comprising M.Sc and Ph.D. in basic sciences. The list of programs are as follows:

Departments

Department of Anatomical Sciences & Pathology

The department of Anatomical Sciences & Pathology has been formed by the integration of two departments of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences in 1992. The department is offering anatomy at macroscopic level, microscopic anatomical (histology) courses, pathology, as well as courses in embryology for both MD and MSc students.

The department offers the following courses in the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Basic Sciences and Engineering:

Human Gross Anatomy
Embryology
Histology
Pathology

The scientific members of Department of Anatomical Sciences & Pathology are Anatomists and Pathologists, with research interests in neuroscience, developmental anatomy, stem cell, and molecular markers of tumor prognosis. Completed research projects are more than 15, the number of published books is more than 20, and more than 80 student theses have been supervised by members of the department.

Department of Health and Community (Social) Medicine

The department of Health and community Medicine was founded in 1992 as part of Faculty of Medicine of Shahed University. This department has 7 academic staff (1 associate professor, 3 assistant professor and 3 instructers). The Department of Health and community Medicine has the responsibility of teaching health, research methods, nutrition courses to students of medicine, dentistry, nursing, traditional medicine, medical ethics, health economics and social sciences. It also participates in conducting research for the other basic and clinical departments of school of medicine.

2. Ali Davati, M.D and M.P.H. Social medicine specialist, Associate professor. Area of research: all fields of health, medical education, medical ethics, health system research.

3. Farhad Jafari, M.D. and M.P.H. Social medicine specialist, Assistant professor. Area of research: all filds of health, medical education, health economics, traditional medicine, medical ethics, medial history, social medicine & HSR.

4. Nahid Kholdi, M.Sc. of nutrition in health sciences. Area of research: All fields of nutrition in health sciences and community nutrition.

5. Kobra Khajavi Shojai, M.Sc. of maternal and Child health Area of research: Traditional medicin, mother and child health.

6. Akbar Sheikhani, M.P.H. of health and epidemiology. Area of research: Epidemiology of communicable and noncommunicable Islamic viewpoint about health and medicine.

7. Zahra Jouhari, M.Sc. of Environmental health and Ph.D of medical education. Area of research: Environmental health and medical education.

Department of Biochemistry

The department of Biochemistry has been established since 1992 as a part of Faculty of medicine of Shahed University and has 2 academic staff and 1 laboratory and technical assistant. This department is responsible for teaching biochemistry courses to students of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing. It also participate in educating M.Sc. students of Medical Physiology and Immunology. In corporation with other departments, this department can conduct researches in several fields of medical sciences (such as purification of protein and enzyme , research in biochemistry of medicinal plants, cardiovascular and antioxidant as well as obesity studies) .

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology offers the full spectrum of general gynecological and obstetrical care. The Department is organized into sections: General Obstetrics & Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Family Planning and reproductive endocrinology. In addition the Department is engaged in training the clinicians through medical student education programs. The department's research programs include projects addressing specific clinical issues. Clinical services of the department have long been recognized as among the best in the country.

Department of Immunology

Immunology is a field that drastically involves in many aspects of health and disease; and at the other hand, it has strong potential for basic molecular researches and also biological compound production. Therefore, the department of immunology would be able to have research and educational cooperation with various scientific areas. The mission of the Department of Immunology is to provide best possible scientific instruction to students, and conduct novel and meaningful research and to support immunological requirements of other co-workers to some extent.

The Department of Immunology began its work (about 1993) by teaching immunology for medical, dental and nursing students and then by conducting immunology courses for graduate students at the Faculty of Basic Sciences, now training postgraduate students of immunology (MSc) and professional courses for graduate and postgraduate students of other departments or faculties.

More than 18 MSc students of Immunology are graduated and about 14 students are studying. The department planned for training PhD students of Immunology (the plan is in progress). The investigating efforts in these fields lead to valuable (some national) projects and also establishment of a research center in University in cooperation with other interested co-workers (Immuoregulation Research Center).

The co-workers in the Department are interested mostly in two fields of research (other projects are also conducted in the Department):

1- Immunpathological mechanisms underlying the chronic complications of chemical war (particularly Sulfur-mustard) veterans

2- Finding and evaluating Immunoregulatory compounds specially natural or herbal products mostly for cancer and immune-related diseases

Department of Internal Medicine

Internal Medicine education group at shahed university originated in 1994.We are the largest educational group in shahed university including six divisions and 16 full time academic staff. We train general practitioner and consider the training experience to be highly competitive and successful. More than 500 medical students pass our clinical wards through these years.

The five-year plan calls for building a highly qualified general practitioner that will be a major regional provider of first line health-care.
