The Ceremony to Honor and Introduce the New President of SMUMS
With the presence of Dr. Bagheri Fard the Deputy Minister of Health Education a ceremony was held to honor and introduce the new President of Smart University of Medical Sciences.
On Tuesday, May 11, 2024, SMUMS held a ceremony to introduce and honor its old and new presidents. The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Health Education, officials and managers from the field, as well as vice-presidents and officials from the university.
During the meeting, Mr. Bagheri Fard, Deputy Minister of Health Education expressed his gratitude for the two-year efforts of Dr. Khojasteh, the former president of the university, and the measures taken. He emphasized the importance and necessity of continuing the mission of the Smart University.
Following the session, Dr. Arash Khojasteh presented a report on the performance of the university during his 2 years and 4 months as president. He thanked the Ministry of Health and the officials for their support in advancing the goals of the university and fulfilling the expectations.
During the ceremony, Dr. Bakhtiari expressed his gratitude for the actions taken in the university. He emphasized the importance and necessity of education as one of his main concerns. He further stated that the Smart University of Medical Sciences, with its significance and special conditions, should play the main and coordinating role in educating and making other universities smarter. In this direction, it should proceed at high speed. The realization of this important thing can benefit everyone in the matter of health in the society.

The International Vice-Chancellor of Smart University of Medical Sciences is organizing an international webinar titled "Qualitative Research in Medical Education". SMUMS GIAS to Expand Cooperation
During a meeting attended by Dr. Seyed Ahmad Ahmadi, Chancellor for International Affairs at SMUMS, and Dr. Farzad Ghasemzadeh, President of the Georgian International Academy of Sciences (GIAS), the potential for international cooperation to strengthen scientific and academic fields and attract international students was discussed.
A memorandum of understanding has been signed between two parties to promote educational cooperation, facilitate active participation of professors in education and development of international relations, and encourage mutual use of scientific and executive power to enhance scientific, educational, and research activities.
Among the most important issues considered in this memorandum are:
- Establishing the international office of SMUMS in Georgia
- To attract international applicants for short-term and supplementary courses
- Recruiting applicants interested in pursuing master's or doctorate degrees at SMUMS
- Holding joint higher education programs with Georgian universities as joint dual degrees
- Organizing scientific conferences and webinars with the participation of both domestic and international professors
- Collaborating on research in the area of artificial intelligence and e-learning
- Facilitating faculty exchange and study opportunities, as well as visits by professors, researchers and students from both countries
The MOU also aims to facilitate student exchanges between the two countries while adhering to current regulations and sharing information.
The 8th International Conference on Health Law

The department of specialized health Law and academic affairs of Smart University of Medical Sciences intends to hold the eighth international health law conference with an emphasis on interdisciplinary health studies. The conference will take place both in-person and virtually on November 29-30, 2023.
The conference will cover a broad range of topics, including interdisciplinary studies related to Health and Human Sciences, Health Information Technology and Management, Health Economics and Financial Management, Criminal Justice and its impact on health, Health Tourism and Entrepreneurship, Decision Making in Healthcare Management, Geography of Healthcare and Environment, Medical Sciences and Social Welfare, Religion, Spirtuality and Health, Mental Health, Judicial Industries and Agriculture.
It is worth mentioning that in addition to issuing a valid certificate for the participants, this course has training and retraining points for faculty members, doctors, and paramedics.

SMUMS_ECOSF Stablish Partnership
The Smart University of Medical Sciences (SMUMS) has entered into a partnership memorandum with the ECO Science Foundation (ECOSF) on September 30, 2023.
The signing ceremony in Tehran, Iran, was conducted by SMUMS Chancellor Prof. Arash Khojasteh and ECOSF President Prof. Seyed Komail Tayebi at the Smart University of Medical Sciences. Dr. Sayed Ahmad Ahmadi, vice chancellor of international affairs of SMUMS, Dr. Babak Sabet, vice chancellor of academic affairs, Dr. Haniyeh Zehtab, vice chancellor of infrastructure affairs, and Dr. Shahriar Eslamitabar legal director of SMUMS attended the signatory ceremony.
This MoU will lead to ECOSF and SMUMS working closely, as they are both committed to an ongoing relationship to engage in collaborative and joint scientific and technological activities while leveraging respective strengths to undertake research and exchange programmes among the 10 ECO member countries, viz., Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
§ Encourage, promote and facilitate the extension of scientific exchanges among their communities to the common interest of both sides.

MoU, Expanding Cooperation on AI

The Smart University of Medical Sciences, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, and Luqman Medical Education Centre signed a memorandum of collaboration on Monday, May 22, 2023. The leaders of all three medical centers came to the conclusion that considering the favorable conditions of Luqman Hakim Hospital, the use of AI in the hospital should be expanded.
In this meeting, Dr. Arash Khojasteh, the chancellor of the SMUMS, pointed out the functions of using technology in treatment and said: “artificial intelligence and benefiting from the capacity of digital technologies will facilitate the process of improving the health of the society.”
He further emphasized that the expansion of virtual platforms, the use of electronic dashboards, and facilitating the use of smart technology is the priority of the Smart University of Medical Sciences. He announced that the university was ranked 15th in the field of producing artificial intelligence articles last year and noted that the Smart University of Medical Sciences ranked first in the production of artificial intelligence articles in the region last year.
Dr. Zali, chancellor of SBUMS, described Luqman Hospital, as an active and renowned center that is providing health-oriented services and emphasized that new capacity should be created for the maximum use of artificial intelligence while providing collaborative infrastructure.
The First International Congress of Artificial Intelligence in Medical Sciences
The First International Congress of Artificial Intelligence in Medical Sciences (AIMS2023) started with the speech of Dr. Arash Khojasteh, the Chancellor of the Smart University of Medical Sciences and the secretary of the scientific committee of the congress on May 17, 2023, at the Persian Gulf Hall of the International Convention Center of Kish Island.
In addition, Dr. Younes Panahi, Deputy Minister of Research and Technology of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, Dr. Abolfazl Bagherifard, Deputy Minister of Education of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, as well as Dr. Shahriari, the head of the Health and Medical Commission of the Parliament, made speeches.
The Congress was held with the presence of all medical sciences universities of the country, students, and professionals in the field of artificial intelligence and provided a great opportunity to present and discuss the latest scientific research and studies in the related panels.
G5 Experts Meeting on Health Cooperation

SMUMS launches Digital Library
Dr. Babak Sabet, vice chancellor of academic affairs of the Smart University of Medical Sciences, announced the launch of the digital library of the Smart Medical Sciences University, with the aim of making it easier for students to access digital resources.
Dr. Babak Sabet stated that the library of the Smart University of Medical Sciences has created 1256 membership profiles for all students, faculty members and staff. Therefore, these members can use the library services without applying for membership. In this regard, in order to use offline and electronic services, the members of the library must only visit the website of the digital library at http://elib.smums.ac.ir/ and enter their username and password in the "login" section at the top of the page of the main portal to enter the library portal. It should be noted that the username and password to enter the digital library is the member's national code.
Referring to the importance of updating library resources, Dr. Babak Sabet noted that 1000 English books in the field of artificial intelligence, medical education, psychology, general medicine, computer, virtual reality and augmented reality in medical sciences, educational technologies in medical sciences, system development software in the field of health have been purchased this year for members of the digital library of the Smart University of Medical Sciences to use and read.
Conclusion of MOU between the SUMS and the COMSTECH Inter-Islamic Network on Virtual Universities
SMUMS and COMSTECH Inter-Islamic Network on Virtual Universities (CINVU) conclude a memorandum of understanding for the development of educational capacity and the international dissemination of medical science.
In the meeting of signing the MOU, Dr. Khojasteh, Chancellor of the SUMS, stated, “The Smart University of Medical Sciences intends to become a symbol of the new generation universities among the country's medical sciences universities. The activities of this university have led to an increase in efficiency of education. The use of new technologies in all matters related to health is another goal of this university.” He further added that to stabilize our position in the field of smart education and treatment, in addition to producing the right content and program, we must build effective relations in the international scientific sphere.
Dr. Karim Najafi Barzegar, Secretary General of CINVU, stated, “Fifty-seven countries are members of the COMSTECH Inter-Islamic Network on Virtual Universities, and the purpose of forming this network is to develop the infrastructure of Islamic countries. This network covers all the different disciplines which are provided virtually.” He further acknowledged that CINVU intends to actively participate in the Smart University of Medical Sciences sphere of activity. Dr. Karim Najafi Barzegar proposed that CINVU can facilitate exchange between smart universities to take bigger steps for the economic growth of this university according to the recommendations of the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding economic growth.
Dr. Seyed Ahmad Ahmadi, Vice Chancellor of International Affairs of the SUMS stated: “We must think and act internationally. According to the orders of Dr. Einollahi, the Minister of Health and Medical Education the most important internationalization strategy in the field of medicine is education and other fields related to it.” He added that CINVU is one of the best choices among international institutions for the internationalization of the university’s activities.

International Congress on Artificial Intelligence in Medical Sciences (AIMS 2023)
The Congress will be a unique opportunity to present significant theoretical, methodological and applied results related to the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medicine.
The AIMS 2023 congress will be hosted by Smart Medical University in Kish Island, Iran from March 17_19, AIME 2023 will include invited speakers, long and short presentations, poster sessions, tutorials, workshops and a doctoral consortium.
With long term political initiatives and planning, Iran aims to become one of the top ten countries in the world in the field of AI by 2031. It is intended to increase GDP by $4 billion by the use of AI techniques in medical sciences.

International Workshop on Reviewing Clinical Guidelines in Iran Was Held in the Virtual University of Medical Sciences
A workshop on clinical guidelines in Iran was organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) with the participation of Professor Holger Jens Schünemann and in cooperation with the Vice Chancellor of International Affairs of the VUMS.
This workshop was attended by representatives of the country’s top medical universities, the Food and Drug Administration, the World Health Organization, and Professor Holger Jens Schünemann, of McMaster University in Canada.
The workshop aimed at reviewing clinical guidelines in Iran and was held in the webinar hall of the Virtual University of Medical Sciences.
The topics discussed at this meeting included evaluating the progress of the guidelines issued by the World Health Organization in Iran regarding the WHO vision and reviewing standards and guidelines of Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education.
VUMS, CanHealth Stablish Partnership
Virtual University of Medical Sciences (VUMS), has entered into a partnership memorandum with the CanHealth International institute in order to promote training programs internationally, and to achieve a prominent stance in region, VUMS represented by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education has entered in to this memorandum of understanding with CanHealth International Institute. The aim of this memorandum is to use the CyberPatient educational platform (developed in collaboration with the University of British Columbia-Canada).
Students, assistants, fellows and faculty members of the 5 Iranian pilot universities can use this platform for a period of six (6) months and it is renewable every six (6) months. CyberPatientis a digital hospital that provides online interactive training. With the help of this platform, students of medical sciences can reach over 120 specific and simulated clinical cases so that they can examine the aspects of cases to become familiar with them, before visit real patients. It is predicted that using this educational platform, will help to improve critical thinking and decision-making skills and will promote patient safety and decrease student burnout.
Participation of Smart Medical University in the Third Forum of CINVU
The general assembly of COMSTECH Inter-Islamic Network on Virtual Universities (CINVU) was held in Islamabad, Pakistan on May 11 and 12 with the virtual presence of representatives from Iran and member countries.
COMSTECH Inter-Islamic Network on Virtual Universities (CINVU) consists of 57 members and its permanent secretariat is in Iran. In the opening ceremony, the permanent secretary general of this forum emphasized the importance of increasing and promoting inter-university interactions to realize educational justice in all Islamic countries, especially the member universities. COMSTECH Inter-Islamic Network on Virtual Universities (CINVU) provides a rich base for strengthening and expanding higher education in the Islamic world, this network plays an important role in increasing the quality of education among member countries.
Dr. Seyed Ahmad Ahmadi, the Vice Chancellor of International Affairs of the Smart Medical University took an active part in the third general assembly’s virtual meeting of COMSTECH Inter-Islamic Network on Virtual Universities (CINVU) where he presented an overview of the activities and experiences of the Smart Medical University. After the presentation of the activities and experiences of the member universities, the existing potentials and capacities were examined to strengthen further and develop public higher education in the virtual platform of information technology in member universities of the Islamic world.
On the second day, the new members of the Executive Committee of Islamic Virtual Universities were selected. In this election, representatives of the universities of Iran, Pakistan, Syria, Indonesia, Turkey, Chad, and Gabon were introduced as new committee members.
