Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute

The Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute was established in 1993 as the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Centre of Tehran University of Medical Sciences on Dr. Shariati University Hospital Campus in Tehran. The primary goal of the centre was to lay the foundation for a multi disciplinary research complex, encompassing both clinical and experimental basic medical sciences aspects of endocrinology and metabolism with a focus on diabetes and osteoporosis. As a result of its outstanding performance, the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Centre (EMRC) was promoted to the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute (EMRI) by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2010.

In 2012, once again, the Institute was officially promoted to the highest possible status of a research organization in Iran. We are determined to harness full capacity of resources to enhance the standing of it even further and make it the highest ranking research institute in the field of endocrine diseases in the region.

The fields in which EMRI already has strength and intends to grow further include, but are not limited to, diabetes, osteoporosis, endocrinology, biosensors, metabolic disorders, obesity, noncommunicable diseases, elderly health, and chronic diseases. Each of the abovementioned fields of research is covered by a designated research center affiliated to EMRI.

Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute is affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences and is comprised of three affiliated research institutes each of which is comprised of several research centres. Three research institutes of the EMRI are: Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinical Sciences Institute (inclusive of Diabetes Research Centre, Osteoporosis Research Centre ,and  Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Centre), Endocrinology and Metabolism Molecular-Cellular Sciences Institute (inclusive of Biosensor Research Centre, Metabolic Disorders Research Centre, Obesity and Eating Habit Research Centre), and Endocrinology and Metabolism Population Sciences Institute (inclusive of Chronic Disease Research Centre, Elderly Health Research Centre, and Non-communicable Diseases Research Centre).

Why EMRI?

The most prominent features of the institute, to name a few, are: the well-equipped and modern laboratories such as genetic, hormone, bionanotechnology, molecular and cellular biology, and food and drug research laboratories. Clinical facilities, diagnostic laboratories, and imaging departments are also integrated into the research institute in order to ensure that they cover a wide range of activities in the field.

In pursuit of its goals, the Institute:

  • Provides well-equipped integrated laboratories and facilities for clinical and basic research.
  • Defines teaching and research in the context of clinical service delivery and fosters the translation of research findings into clinical practice.
  • Provides high-level training and job opportunities for scientists, doctors, nurses and other professionals.
  • Forges links and promotes collaboration between research and clinical expertise of groups investigating a wide range of related diseases at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
  • Creates opportunities for cross-fertilisation of ideas and synergy, thereby encouraging national health initiatives.
