History of Tarbiat Modares University (TMU)

Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) as the first and only graduate university in Iran was founded in 1982 after the Islamic Revolution of Iran. The main goal of this university is to train academic staff and researchers for universities and higher education centers. As a graduate university, TMU offers M.A/M.Sc. degrees in 171 academic programs and Ph.D. degrees in 132 academic programs, with more than 6200 and 3700 students in each level, respectively. At the present time, there are 17 faculties and 14 affiliated research centers in the university. Furthermore, Legal Studies Center as well as Science and Technology Study Group (in Management Studies Center) are being launched in near future. The university enjoys the cooperation of 696 fulltime academic members. The central campus of the university is located in Tehran, the capital of Iran, while the Faculty of Agriculture is located 17 km West of Tehran, and the Faculty of Natural Resources and Marine Sciences is located in the Caspian Sea Coast, Nur, Mazandaran Province, North of Iran. Libraries, computer centers, sport halls, restaurants, coffee shops and several dormitories are other facilities of the university. Since TMU is relatively young and newly established, it is still under expansion and several new buildings for the Faculties of Management and Economics, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering are under construction. As TMU is a graduate university, research activities are of high priority in its programs, and software & hardware facilities are planned in this respect. Many Ph.D. students may visit other international universities for the promotion of their research work, for a 6 to 9 months period. Future programs of TMU can be divided into several main directions. Concerning the research activities, in addition to presenting our research results to national and international journals, we will develop and strengthen our cooperation with the industrial and agricultural sectors, and set our research activities based on their demands and society needs. More steps towards leveling up research supporting facilities have been scheduled for the future.
