 Department of Biostatistics

The Department of Biostatistics was established within the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation sciences (USWR) in 1992.

The department is one of the first departments established at USWR. Each year the department admits international students for postgraduate programs and welcomes students interested in all areas of biostatistics. Departmental research by statistical methods and the consultancy service provide many opportunities for them.

What is Biostatistics?

There is no doubt that statistics is part of our lives and statistical analysis is the most important tool in many fields. Biostatistics in an innovative science that involves the application of statistical techniques to scientific research in health-related fields including rehabilitation sciences and it assumes a central role in medical research.

Aims

The Department teaches a variety of courses and covers statistical research related to rehabilitation. The department offers a degree program at master's level. The Master of Science program in Biostatistics is based on a curriculum proposed by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education.

Our vision is to prepare the highest quality biostatistics students in the world. And our mission is to equip students with the latest world knowledge of biostatistics and ability to perform innovative research. Towards achieving the aforementioned vision and mission, our academic staff works incredibly hard to provide excellent research and a dynamic education. With this aim in mind, we work in collaboration with other universities at national and international level.

Teaching

We teach postgraduate students based on a fully integrated curriculum that combines self-directed learning opportunities with high quality lectures and tutorials. Our faculty members familiarizes the students with the various design and analysis of studies, survival analysis, Survey design, longitudinal analysis, Bayesian methods, design and analysis of clinical trials, data analysis of other types and interpretation of results, advice on statistical computing packages and workshops.

Research

Our experienced consultants have excellent collaboration with researchers in other departments and they provide support to enable other academic members, staff, graduate and undergraduate students to understand statistical analyses. They help ensure that the proper design, methodology and analyses are applied to each scientific research. When you are interested in carrying out research in medical sciences, our department will provide answers to many of your questions.

Services We Offer

Our faculty members focus on developing new methods to prepare individuals in consultant positions in rehabilitation research. In addition to the biostatistics MSc program, our courses in biostatistics are also designed for students in non-biostatistics at the USWR. They are required to take at least one module in biostatistics in the first year of their program. Students will develop a clear understanding of statistical methods and their applications in this module.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 has introduced University of Social Welfare & Rehabilitation among the top institutions worldwide.

The ranking includes more than 1,600 universities across 99 countries and territories, making them the largest and most diverse university rankings to date.The table is based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

Iranian longitudinal Study on Aging (IRLSA) database launched

The national project "Iranian longitudinal Study on Aging" IRLSA was officially launched in January 2020 by Research Center on Aging of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences in collaboration with the Welfare Department of Yazd Province, Yazd University of Medical Sciences and Ardakan County Research Center.

    In this national project, information is collected on 5,000 samples of middle-aged people aged 50 to older (even 90 years old) who have participated in the project, and during 15 years, based on about one thousand variables, Physical, psychological, social, spiritual and environmental changes of these people are monitored to determine the problems of population.

 

The results and information obtained from the implementation of the first phase of the project are a guide for the country's National Aging Document and can help organizations involved in aging to plan to address the problems of the elderly.
