Department of Health in Emergency and Disaster

The department has been set up to implement the Health in Emergencies and Disasters educational program/curriculum and train qualified graduates to work in related job positions in this specialized field. The Department of Health in Emergency and Disaster is an interdisciplinary group of scientists, approved by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education in 2009 which is under supervision of University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences.

The mission of the department is to increase the current and future educated/trained human resources capacity of the health sector in order to educate, produce scientific evidences, and manage emergencies and disasters in field of health, and reduce disaster potential risks.

What is Health in Emergencies and Disasters?

This field explains the four stages of Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery in Disasters, including Natural, Manmade, and Biological and to make plan to maintain and enhance the physical, psychological and social health of affected populations.  

It is good to mention that Disaster Risk Management focuses on the field of health as an essential mission of this discipline.

Aims

 1. Capacity building of the current and future human resources of the health sector in field of education, research, policy making and risk management in emergencies and disasters.

 2- Determining the scientific needs of the health sector to manage and reduce the risk of natural, man -made and biological threats.

 3. Participation in vulnerability reduction and reducing adverse health consequences in natural and man- made disasters.

 4. Increasing the country's contribution to science production and knowledge management. Preparing and reducing the risk of disasters and emergencies in the region and the world.

 5- Development of scientific cooperation with the scientific /educational centers of the country as well as other countries and international organizations in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Teaching

 1. Teaching different topics related to health in emergencies and disasters for students and learners of health related disciplines.

 2- Holding academic courses and workshops to train and enhance skills and improve the competency of managers, experts and staff working in health related areas in emergencies and disasters.

 3. Designing, developing and evaluating educational programs related to this field to enhance knowledge, awareness and community skills in disaster risk management.

Research

 1. Participation in the production and dissemination of knowledge of preparedness, response, recovery and reduction of natural, man-made and biological hazards in the health sector through the design and implementation of applied research and the dissemination of its results.

 2- Designing research questions in order to formulate and implement research projects based on the needs of the country and in order to solve the problems of health managers in emergency and disaster.

 Services we offer

 1- Providing advice/consultation on disaster risk management programming, policy making, decision-making and problem-solving in the area of ​​health in emergencies and disasters at national and international levels.

 2- Supporting and implementation of evidence-based research projects at the level of national plans for identifying risk reduction and disaster risk management strategies in the field of health.

 3- Designing and presenting specialized training courses to enhance the knowledge and skills of human resources working in different parts of the health in emergencies and disasters.

 4. Design and implementation of training programs to increase knowledge, awareness and empowerment of the general public in disaster risk management.
