Department of Ergonomics
The Department of Ergonomics was established within the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences (USWR) in 2007.
Although ergonomics has been considered as an academic discipline for nearly 50 years in some countries, it had been taught only as a module in many fields (including Occupational Health, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Industrial Engineering, etc.) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and was not introduced as a formal course in Iran. In 2007, for the first time in Iran, academic ergonomics was established at University of Social welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences.
What is Ergonomics?
Ergonomics is an applied science that seeks to improve the design and function of tools and other objects used by people. Ergonomics involves designing workplaces and work tools to be used easily, efficiently and effectively by people. The overall goal of this applied science is to promote health and productivity in the workplace.
According to International Ergonomics Association, Ergonomics (or human factors) is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance. Practitioners of ergonomics contribute to the design and evaluation of tasks, jobs, products, environments and systems in order to make them compatible with the needs, abilities and limitations of people.
Aims
The Department of Ergonomics took steps toward becoming one of the country’s best academic centers from the outset. Since then, years have passed and now we are preparing to take further steps forward to achieve our goal. Our department is enthusiastic about supporting students who are eager to be successful ergonomists by providing high quality learning and research environments.
Our vision is to prepare competing post-graduate ergonomics students, together with the mission to deliver world-class knowledge, and perform innovative research. Toward achieving the aforementioned vision and mission, our academic staff works incredibly hard to provide excellent research and dynamic education. Throughout this aim we work in collaboration with other universities at national and international levels.
Teaching
The department offers systematic scientific courses, fostering professional ergonomics, engineers, and designers in private industry to keep up with the latest ergonomics thinking and knowledge. The focus is on specialized domains such as Biomechanics, Physiology, Psychology, Design Ergonomics, Systems Ergonomics, and Ergonomics Methodology.
Research
Cognitive disorders (mental retardation, behavioral and psychiatric disorders)
Our department supports the application of fundamental and applied research to the solution of practical problems. Many students are encouraged to complete Ergonomics modules with courses in Computer Science, Statistics, and Advanced Research Methods. In doing so, we seek to advance ergonomic research and publish research findings to people who can use that information in designing and managing work places, systems, processes, and products. We are also accepting research proposals and ergonomic researchers to collaborate with.
Services We Offer
As an ergonomics student you will also develop skills in learning, problem solving and decision making which are necessary parts in this field. Our nationally and internationally recognized faculty members provide you with the highest quality of work experience in different associated centers. These centers include:
Rofeideh Rehabilitation Hospital
Nezammafi Rehabilitation Center
Asma Rehabilitation Center
