 Department of Speech Therapy

The Department of Speech Therapy was established within the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation sciences (USWR) in 1992. The department is active in teaching theoretical and clinical subjects and also intensely research-active. Therefore, the academics and students are engaged in a variety of research activities. While many students graduated, numerous students are currently studying in our department.  In this world class department, all staff is committed to exemplary professional behavior, collaboration and support.

The department welcomes national and also international students at undergraduate and also postgraduate levels.

What is Speech Therapy?

Speech Therapy as a discipline of Rehabilitation Sciences is concerned with study, assessment, diagnosis and management of speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders in children and adults. It is considered as a combination of science and art. The nature of Speech Therapy demands interrelationship with many disciplines including medicine, psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, and social sciences.

In order to be trained as a speech therapist, basic knowledge of neuroanatomical, physiology of speech mechanisms, phonology, linguistics, psycholinguistics, psychology and psychiatry is necessary. In addition, learning the techniques of diagnosis, assessment and therapy of speech and language disorders is one of the main objectives of the field.

Aims

A speech and language pathologist (speech therapist) should be familiar with the normal development of language, as well as diagnosis of different types of abnormal development of language for assessment and therapeutic objectives. Our aim is to educate skillful graduates to prevent and manage the developmental and acquired communicative disorders through proper diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Teaching

As one of the leading departments in the country, USWR bachelor of Speech Therapy offers the full time study for the BSc degree in four years. Through this program, students enhance their knowledge and develop essential skills in assessment, diagnosis, management and prevention of communication disorders.

The Master of Science in Speech & Language therapy is a two-year program (requiring four academic semesters) which is a course-based program. The Ph.D. in Speech and Language Therapy is a course-based program as well. For students who wish an in-depth education beyond their Master's degree in the area, Ph.D. program provides the opportunity. Students who have achieved a Bachelor degree in speech therapy and already completed a Master degree in speech therapy are eligible to register for Ph.D. program. Completion of the Ph.D. in speech therapy will require four to five years depending upon background and rate of progress. The Ph.D. program will include advanced graduate coursework in speech-language pathology, research methodology and biostatistics in the course-based period of education and completion of a 24 credit dissertation through research period of education.

Research

Research is the foundation for teaching and clinical practice in Speech Therapy Department. Our department has a recognized research profile in different areas such as aphasia, dyslexia, speech resonance disorders, motor speech disorders and voice disorders.

Each of the academic staff based on their research trends and teaching experience is involved in independent research as well as student research streamlining.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 has introduced University of Social Welfare & Rehabilitation among the top institutions worldwide.

The ranking includes more than 1,600 universities across 99 countries and territories, making them the largest and most diverse university rankings to date.The table is based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

Iranian longitudinal Study on Aging (IRLSA) database launched

The national project "Iranian longitudinal Study on Aging" IRLSA was officially launched in January 2020 by Research Center on Aging of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences in collaboration with the Welfare Department of Yazd Province, Yazd University of Medical Sciences and Ardakan County Research Center.

    In this national project, information is collected on 5,000 samples of middle-aged people aged 50 to older (even 90 years old) who have participated in the project, and during 15 years, based on about one thousand variables, Physical, psychological, social, spiritual and environmental changes of these people are monitored to determine the problems of population.

 

The results and information obtained from the implementation of the first phase of the project are a guide for the country's National Aging Document and can help organizations involved in aging to plan to address the problems of the elderly.
